Theme song of “ANG GURO KONG ‘DI MARUNONG MAGBASA” reflects the movie’s cry for hope

“It reinforces the message of the film,” said Alvin Barcelona, singer and composer of “Darating Din, ” the original theme song of the Cinemalaya action-drama ”Ang Guro Kong ‘Di Marunong Magbasa.”

_MG_0594“I wrote the song after I’ve read the film’s script, which is very moving and powerful,” said Barcelona, who is also a motivational speaker and preacher. “The words came to me easily because I am also advocating education and peace. It helped that I am also part of the film.”

“Ang Guro Kong ’Di Marunong Magbasa,” written and directed by Perry Escaño, is one of nine full length film finalists of the 2017 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, which will run from August 4 to 13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and select Ayala Cinemas. It will also have its nationwide commercial release on September 20.

It tells the struggles of a farmer named Aaquil (Alfred Vargas), who does everything he can to teach the children of his town to read and write, in spite of being illiterate himself.

This happens at a time when, out of poverty and helplessness, a large number of children are being recruited by rebels to take up arms against the government.

True to form, Barcelona plays Ka Jose (in the film), who serves as a negotiator between the rebel forces and the government.

It also carries two more of Barcelona’s compositions, namely “Tell Me Please What’s Happening” and “Mahal Ng Diyos Ang Pilipinas.”

“I am honored to be collaborating with an extremely talented artist like Brother Alvin,” said director Escaño. “I know of and respect the work that he does. That’s why I personally asked him to help me and my film reach out to as many Filipino audience as possible.”
